Girl Scout Little House
600 6th Avenue, S.E.
Circa 1947
In 1943, Julia Chenault organized the Wheeler Area Girl Scout Council in Decatur, Alabama. The following year, the Council asked the City of Decatur for permission to convert the openair bandshell in Delano Park into a meeting place for local Girl Scouts, and the city agreed. In 1947, the stone framework of the structure was enclosed with cement block, and the building, which became known as the Girl Scout Little House, was completed and ready for meetings to begin. The Girl Scout Little House served as the Council Office and a gathering place for girls and adults across North Central Alabama. Over the decades, it has hosted special Girl Scout events, troop meetings and sleepovers, leader training, recruitment activities, and celebrations. In 1981, Friends of the Little House formed as an organization to restore the Girl Scout Little House to acceptable conditions for troop meetings and ensure its future care. Local businesses and individuals generously donated funds to renovate the building over the following few years. Today, Friends of the Little House work with the City of Decatur to maintain this historic building. For many generations of girls and their leaders, the Girl Scout Little House remains a cherished place filled with memories. Be sure to enjoy the Girl Scout Little House as part of this year’s Christmas Tour. As an added feature, Santa Claus will be on hand at the Little House for “Selfies with Santa”.
