The Carroll House
636 Johnston Street SE
c. 1891
Built circa 1891, the Carroll home in historic Albany boasts one of the most charming, unique architectural styles of its time, Victorian Italianate. This quaint two-story home showcases a low-pitched roof, deep projecting, and corbeled eaves which are hallmarks of this style. The Italianate style began in England as a reaction to the formal classical ideas of art and architecture that had been fashionable for centuries. Two of the earliest residents of this house were James R. and Margaret Etta Boggs Doss, who moved to Decatur from Rome, Georgia in 1907. Another previous owner, Nancy Gillespie, was an avid collector of Christmas villages during her time on Johnston Street. Two of her daughters, Tonya and Shannon, will be visiting the home during this year’s tour where they will display some of their mother’s village collection and share some history of this home with tour participants. This Johnston Street period treasure retains its original ornate wrought iron front door, hard wood floors, fireplace, and its unique and beautiful interior moldings, Current owner, Jane Carroll, purchased this home in 2022. Tour-goers will recognize the homeowner’s style while admiring her French country design touches. Equally mesmerizing, you will see family heirloom antiques, a unique vintage tinsel Christmas tree, and some incredible artwork by local artists displayed throughout the home. Be sure to make 636 Johnston Street SE one of your tour stops this year.
