Decatur Methodist Church

701 Oak Street NE

c. 1953

Tour guests are invited to explore this magnificent historic church on December 14 between 2 and 7 pm. Visitors will experience the original Christmas story with the presentation of a special live nativity scene which will recreate the scene of Christ’s birth from 5 to 7 pm. Decatur Methodist will also feature live Christmas music throughout the day, creating a festive and reflective atmosphere. The church, originally known as Decatur First Presbyterian Church, has been an integral part of Decatur since 1853. It was established by the Tuscumbia Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. The original building, located on the southeast corner of Bank and Church Streets, was dismantled during the Civil War by the Union Army in 1864. The resilient congregation continued to worship with local Methodists in a shared log structure until a new church building could be reconstructed. Over the years, the church saw several building projects, culminating in the completion of the present Christopher Wren-style sanctuary in 1953, with expansions added in 1978. This beloved sanctuary has become a landmark in Decatur, embodying the faith and history of the congregation and the broader community. In Advent 2022, a new group began worshiping in the building, officially forming a new congregation in January 2023. This marked a new chapter for the building as Decatur Methodist Church, continuing its legacy as a beacon of light in the community.  Whether you are a long-time resident of Decatur or visiting the city for the first time, Decatur Methodist Church welcomes you to join in celebrating the history, faith, and joyous spirit of the season. Step inside this historic sanctuary, take in the warmth and beauty of the Christmas decorations, and reflect on the enduring legacy of faith that has shaped this church and community for generations.
