The Dupper House

421 6th Avenue SE

c. 1888

This historic Queen Anne Victorian home is located in the middle of the Albany Historic District at 421 6th Avenue SE. It is best identified by its wrap-around veranda, ornate front door, and complex multi-light windows. The use of wood shingles on the second floor and clapboard siding on the main floor is an unusual character-defining feature of this home. The second porch originally had a sleeping porch on the north end, which was common at the turn of the century.  The porch was filled in with windows at an unknown date. William A. and Mary Curry were residents of this house during the 1910s. William, an accountant, served as the secretary-treasurer of the A. Z. Baily Grocery Company. By the early 1920s, Walter T. and Pansy Russell resided here. Walter was a traveling salesman, who, by 1938, had accepted a job working at the Stoors Schaffer Clothing Company. The current owner, Austin Dupper, purchased this Queen Anne in 2021. Austin is a football coach at Decatur High School and a youth minister at First Baptist Church. He believes this restoration is a picture of how Jesus restored his life. Since its purchase, the homeowner’s diligent and ongoing restoration efforts continue to bring this home back to life while returning it to its original loveliness. Since purchasing the home, Austin has modernized the downstairs. He removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room resulting in a large kitchen with more useable space. This renovation has made the home more comfortable for modern living by making the downstairs more of an open concept. You will be delighted to witness this amazing ongoing restoration on this year’s Christmas Tour.
