The Sword-Balbuena House

904 Line Street NE

c. 1852

Originally constructed pre-Civil War in 1852, this stately home is a historic property that reflects the architectural charm and character of the mid-19th century, offering over 4,000 square feet of living space across multiple stories. It features 6 bedrooms, full bathrooms and one half-bath, and has a three-car garage. It was first the residence of Mattie Drake Young, widow of Edwin Young. In the 1930s, the house was sold to Benjamin and Elizabeth Isbell. Benjamin owned the Isabell Grist Mill, which was located on Wilson Street. By the early 1950s, the home was sold to Edward and Joyce Stone. It was during their ownership that major changes were made to the exterior façade, completely changing the style of the home.  Based on the thought that the Victorian style was out of vogue, the Stones removed all exterior traces of its original Victorian-era design and transformed the facade to its current Neo-Classical style. This now Neo-Classical home is best identified by its symmetrical front façade and majestic two-story fluted Ionic columns. It is apparent that this home has gone through multiple updates over time, maintaining its residential appeal while blending modern comforts with its original structure. Inside, tour guests will be dazzled by the home’s formal parlor and dining room, elaborate moldings and cornices, and breathtaking chandeliers in almost every room. Additionally, this home features large rooms and grand staircases with walnut wainscoting. Current owners Jesus and Sarita Balbuena invite you to visit their magnificent and distinctive home located at 904 Line Street in the heart of the Old Decatur Historic District on December 14.
