Booth Home
408 4th Avenue SE
Constructed circa 1900, this Queen Anne Victorian has decorative shingles on the front façade. Bay windows were added in 1987 creating additional room and a distinctive rising sun was incorporated into the exterior structure giving it a look all its own. The original structure was built in a three gable style. A fourth gable was added later creating a charming rear entrance. The house has its original poplar siding and the structure is fronted by a wide, covered porch with elaborate spindle work.
The house had a number of residents in the early 20th century, showcasing the rapid growth of Albany. Among the notable residents were Luther (manager of the local Coca Cola bottling company) and Ruby Nash. In 1987, Shirley and Jim Johnson purchased 408 Fourth Avenue, along with two other aging turn of the century homes. All three were located on Fourth Avenue next door to each other. Jim, a prominent local architect, restored all three houses, capturing the glory of their historical past while creating beautiful and comfortable homes for modern living. 408 was the first of the three homes to be restored to its original grandeur. The restoration took this home from 1,300 square feet to 2,700 square feet. A sunken den, elaborate crown moldings, hardwood floors salvaged from a local Decatur school gymnasium, additional bedrooms, and baths are a few of the improvements made by the Johnson’s. Current owners, Cliff and Rhonda Booth, purchased this home in 2022. Since then, they have created a lovely and inviting home. Their love of craftsmanship, antiques, and Asian inspired art is evident throughout. Inspired by antique candlesticks belonging to Rhonda’s mother, the Booths’ have filled their home with just the right combination of antiques and modern art, with every room uniquely complimented with Asian inspired art and fabrics. Brilliantly decorated for Christmas, this home is a must see on this year’s Christmas Tour.
