Peebles-Jones Home

614 Gordon Drive SE

Built circa 1887, this stately home sits on a large lot facing iconic Delano Park. It was originally constructed as a grand Queen Anne Victorian. However, when this architectural style became unpopular in the late 20th century, the home underwent a massive exterior and interior renovation, transforming it in to a New Orleans style home. The home is two-story frame, with a combination hipped and gabled roof and a square front facade. Four massive lattice posts shape the front portico and provide support for a second story balcony. Historical documents indicate the lattice work, often referred to as “treillage”, was added circa 1960. Treillage was first made popular in France, becoming relevant in America during the industrial age with the expansion of the railroad system across the country. Some rooms retain their original floors, most notably are the magnificent inlaid hardwoods found in the Golf room. Encompassing the entire width of the first floor is a stunningly decorated double living area separated slightly at its center by Doric columns. Currently serving as the living and formal dining rooms, the entire space is adorned with crown molding, exquisite light fixtures, and is magnificently decorated for the holidays. Simply put, this 4 bedroom, 5 bathroom home is an entertainer’s paradise.

Archival records indicate Eugene and Mary Allison were among the first residents of this home. Eugene was a real estate insurance agent. The next documented owners were Walter and Blanche Floyd. Mr. Floyd was superintendent of Goodyear’s Decatur Mills. In 1946, the home was purchased by the Peebles family, who owned it for approximately 71 years. Current owners, Dr. Ed and Nancy Jones purchased the home in 2024. Ed and Nancy have since added their own touches to include refreshing the kitchen and bathrooms, adding wainscoting along the staircase walls, and painting the interior of the home. Golf and racing enthusiasts will be fascinated by Ed’s golf and race car memorabilia, while others will be mesmerized by Nancy’s art and pottery collections. When visiting 614 Gordon Drive, guests will be dazzled by this home’s unique architecture, its interior beauty, its grounds, and by the owners’ exquisite collections of art, pottery and memorabilia.
