House Home

414 Walnut Street NE

Constructed in the early 20th century circa 1927, this home was likely constructed in a Craftsman style originally, but was extensively modified in the late 20th century changing the front first floor facade from shiplap to brick. The brick façade is painted with a German Smear giving the home a white washed look, resembling that of a cottage. It has a gabled roof and a traditional southern style front porch that extends across its front and is supported by ribbed columns. Historical records indicate the first residents were William O. and Maude Talley.  The couple remained in the house possibly through the early thirties.  Mr. Talley owned the Talley Furniture Company on Bank Street, a store that specialized in new and used furniture.  By 1936 Albert G. and Patty Danforth resided here.  Albert was a tobacco salesman.  By 1942 Thomas M. and Mary R. Pettey were residents.  Thomas worked for the Decatur Drug Company.

Ken and Becky House now call 414 Walnut home. Beautifully decorated for Christmas, this home’s interiors will be filled with holiday tradition. Beautifully decorated Christmas trees and garlands will make every room fill warm and cozy while the homeowner’s extensive nutcracker and nativity collections will remind you of the reason for the Season. Some of the home’s features are classic matching book shelves and original windows flanking a centered fire place in the living room. The first floor also includes a second living space which functions as a den and an office space, a large formal entertaining dining room and kitchen, a sun room, and the primary bedroom suite.  These rooms are adorned with crown molding. The center hall grand staircase ascends to the second floor where guests will be amazed by the original heart of pine floors, additional bedrooms and the “bunk room”. This unique kid cave is where Ken and Becky’s grandchildren bunk together when visiting. It is the place where they enjoy games, watch television, and make unforgettable memories. The House family invites you to visit their home on December 13th during this year’s Historic Decatur Christmas Tour.
